James J. Bochnowski, General Partner, Delphi Ventures

Mr. Bochnowski founded Delphi Ventures in 1988. His focus is on medical devices and biotechnology. Mr. Bochnowski began investing in medical companies in 1981 after co-founding Technology Venture Investors, a private venture capital partnership. Since 1984, he has focused exclusively on healthcare investments. From 1976 to 1980, Mr. Bochnowski was with Shugart Associates, a venture-backed disk drive company. As President and CEO, he led Shugart to increasing profitability, with annual revenues growing from $13 million to $200 million. Shugart was acquired by Xerox in 1979.

 

Trained as an aerospace engineer, Mr. Bochnowski served as an Army officer and a missile systems engineer with the U.S. Army Missile Intelligence Directorate, serves on the Board of Overseers of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and is a member of the Harvard School of Public Health's Health Policy and Management Executive Council. Mr. Bochnowski currently serves on the Boards of Directors of ArKal Medical, Inc., Ascent Healthcare Solutions, Inc., CollaGenex Pharmaecuticals, Inc. (CGPI), ImmuLogic Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (IMUL), Natus Medical, Inc. (BABY), Synaptics, Inc. (SYNA) and SynergEyes, Inc.  He holds an M.B.A. with Distinction from Harvard University Graduate School of Business and a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  

 

Kerry Dance Ph.D., Managing Director, Hamilton BioVentures

 

Dr. Dance has 25 years of executive experience, both as a scientist and a leader, and has focused on life sciences since the beginning the formation of Hamilton in 1998. Dr. Dance came to San Diego in 1978 and became President of General Atomics Corporation. While at General Atomics he founded an in-house venture enterprise (one of the first in San Diego) which produced a successful track record and spun off several successful enterprises, including the San Diego Super Computer Center. Dr. Kerry Dance currently is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Angstrom Pharmaceuticals and observes on the Board of Ceregene. Dr. Dance attended Stanford University where he received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with a Nuclear Option and Math Minor and B.S. and M.S. degrees in Engineering Science.

 

Michael Kleine, President and Chief Executive Officer of Biosensors International

 

Mr. Kleine was appointed President and CEO of Biosensors International in January of 2008.  He has more than 25 years experience in the medical device industry and has successfully managed several biomedical companies.  Prior to joining Biosensors, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of MicroVention Inc., a subsidiary of Terumo Corporation. Microvention is a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of minimally invasive products for treatment for cerebral and vascular peripheral diseases.  Previously, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Thermo Cardiosystems, Inc. which focused on cardiac surgery devices and which successfully merged with Thoratec.  Mr. Kleine also held positions as Chief Executive Officer of Sorin Biomedical Inc. and President of Bird Medical Technologies. Mr. Kleine holds a B.A. in biology from Missouri Valley College, and a M.A. in marketing from Webster University.

 

Thomas G. Klopack, President and Chief Executive Officer, IntelliDot

 

Mr. Klopack is the President and CEO of IntelliDOT Corporation. IntelliDOT is a San Diego venture-backed company that produces and installs a best of breed barcode medication administration system to eliminate the major problem of medication errors made by care givers at the hospital bedside. IntelliDOT’s CAREtTM System incorporates integrated software and wireless handheld hardware designed specifically to fit nurse workflows. The system is fully developed, deployed in customer hospitals, and being actively sold. Prior to joining IntelliDOT, Mr. Klopack held management positions in biotechnology—first as the COO of Aurora Biosciences in San Diego, and more recently as CEO of Aclara Biosciences in Mountain View, CA. Previously, he spent 18 years with Raychem Corporation in various management positions. Mr. Klopack holds a Chemical Engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon University and a M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

 

Jack W. Lasersohn, General Partner, The Vertical Group

 

Mr. Lasersohn has over twenty-five years of experience in health care venture capital investments. Prior to joining The Vertical Group's predecessor, F. Eberstadt in 1981, Mr. Lasersohn was a corporate attorney with Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Mr. Lasersohn currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Alsius Corporation, Bacchus Vascular, Inc., Kyphon Inc., Masimo Corporation, Metabolix, Inc., Oncomed, Photothera, Proteolix , Timi3 Systems, Inc. and TetraLogic Pharmaceuticals. He previously served on the boards of CardioThoracic Systems, Inc., Cardiovascular Imaging Systems, Inc., and E.P. Technologies. Mr. Lasersohn received a B.S. degree in Physics from Tufts University, an M.A. from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.

 

Jay Watkins, Managing Director, DeNovo Ventures

 

Mr. Watkins was a co-founder of Origin Medsystems, a venture funded medical technology start-up that was purchased by Eli Lilly & Company in 1992. When Eli Lilly divested its medical device businesses to form Guidant in 1995, he became a member of the corporation’s management committee, serving in this role from 1995-2002. During this time, he served as president of numerous divisions, including the Minimally Invasive Surgery Group. In addition, Mr. Watkins was the President of Compass, Guidant Corporation’s corporate business development and new ventures group. Prior to founding Origin, Mr. Watkins held management positions in several start-ups, including Microgenics Corporation, and was a consultant with the international consulting firm of McKinsey & Company. He has been a member of the board of directors of several public companies, including Gynecare, Cardiogenesis, and Rita Medical and currently serves on the boards of directors of EBR Systems, Hansen Medical, Inspiration Medical, Pulmonx, SynergEyes and Ventus Medical. Mr. Watkins also serves on the Stanford University School of Engineering Advisory Council. Mr. Watkins received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and his undergraduate degree from Stanford University.

Thomas C. Wilder III, PhotoThera, Inc
President and Chief Executive Officer

 

Mr. Wilder served most recently as President of ev3's Neurovascular Division. From 2002 to 2006, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of MicroTherapeutics Inc., a publicly-held medical device company focused on neurovascular technologies. MicroTherapeutics, Inc. was acquired by ev3 in January 2006.

 

From 1991 to 2002, Mr. Wilder served at Medtronic Inc., most recently as Vice President and General Manager of its endovascular stent grafts division. During his tenure at Medtronic, he also held a variety of positions at U.S. and international locations, including Hong Kong, Belgium and The Netherlands. Wilder earned a B.A. from Stanford University and a M.M. from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

 

Jackson Streeter, M.D., PhotoThera, Inc.
Founder and Executive Chairman

 

Dr. Streeter founded PhotoThera after evaluating therapeutic infrared laser technology for the U.S. Navy in the mid 90’s. He is one of the pioneering scientists in the area of using infrared energy for the treatment of injured tissue and is the holder of numerous issued and pending patents utilizing the technology. Dr. Streeter serves on the Board of Directors and is also the co-chairman of the medical device committee of BIOCOM.

Dr. Streeter earned his B.S. degree in Biology, graduating with High Distinction from the University of Nevada Reno and received his M.D. from the University of Nevada School Of Medicine. He then went on to serve as an Officer in the U.S. Navy, completing a general surgery internship at Naval Regional Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia and then primary Flight School at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. Dr. Streeter was the first Naval Flight Surgeon selected as a Top Gun staff instructor. He has over 400 flight hours in the F/A 18 Hornet and F-14 Tomcat. He has been awarded the Navy Achievement Medal (2) and the Navy Commendation Medal.
